A low birth weight baby is a baby born weighing less than 5.5 pounds or 2500 grams.

Low birth weight babies are not just small babies. They can have serious health problems at birth and for the rest of their lives.

These problems can affect the baby's heart, lungs, and brain, as well as their behaviour and school performance as they grow older.

Your health care provider can tell you more about why some babies are born with a low birth weight.
